    Therapy for Trauma

Sometimes, what helps us survive a traumatic event, can also stand in the way of healing from the trauma. While some people can recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends, most of us experience deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or what we call post-traumatic stress far after the event has passed. In these circumstances, it is fundamental to receive support, guidance, and assistance from a therapist experienced in treating trauma.

Trauma Symptoms may include the following:

    Avoidance Symptoms

    • Avoiding specific locations, sights, situations, and sounds that serve as reminders of the event
    • Anxiety, depression, numbness, guilt and/or shame

    Re-experiencing Symptoms

    • Intrusive thoughts, nightmares and/or flashbacks
    • Re-enactment of the trauma in real life or in play

    Hyper-arousal Symptoms

    • Anger, irritability, and/or hyper-vigilance
    • Aggressive, reckless behavior, including self-harm
    • Sleep disturbances

    Negative Mood and Cognition Symptoms

    • Loss of interest in activities that were once considered enjoyable
    • Difficulty remembering details of the distressing event
    • Change in habits or behavior since the trauma
